We don’t have 60,000 mile check-ups for our appliances like we do for our vehicles. However, there are things that we can do to maintain them on a regular basis.
Here a some quick tips on how to maintain your washer and dryer for long life and excellent performance.
If you have a High Efficiency (which can be either Front Load or Top Load, you must use “HE” soap (liquid is best).
The majority of customers still use too much soap. Even if you think you are using very little you are probably still using too much! Only 2 tablespoons is all you need.
Remember liquid is best. Be sure to shake the container of soap! The ingredients settle, and the soap companies want you to use a lot, (the more you use the more they sell).
Soap companies redesigned the ingredients for soap, however the washing machines use less water so again very little soap is all you need. 2 tablespoons of soap is all you need no matter want size and how dirty.
Be sure to shake the softener as well. Some of the softeners are concentrated so you can dilute by 50% with water, then shake!
Remember to not overload and make sure you have a balanced load. Towels with towels, jeans with jeans, the fabric or the weight of the material are very important.
Use the Washing Machine cleaning tablet (we like and use “Affresh”) monthly which will keep the tub clean and prevent the possibility of mold and smell.
On the front load when not in use keep the door open slightly and the soap dispenser pulled out just a little, the air can circulate and dry out.
The dryer is an easy one. With just a little maintenance, the dryer is set.
Make sure to clean the lint screen every load.
If you use dryer sheets at least every few months soak the lint screen in white vinegar and scrub the screen clean. The dryer sheets leave a film on the screen and can cause the air flow to become less, and cause an internal part to fail.
The venting in the back of the dryer should not be pinched. If the venting goes to the roof or a long distance to the outside it should be cleaned about every 3 to 5 years by a professional duct cleaning company.
The dryer with the lint screen on the top is a more efficient design. If the lint screen is in the door area the dryer should be serviced about every 3 years. Dryer fires are a common cause of house fires.
